Artist Statement
My work explores the complexities of individual experience and how it intersects with the larger world. In a search for understanding, I investigate the multi-faceted layers of the world outside as well as my internal self. I aim to move past simplifications and appreciate the intricacies of the world as I understand them. I do this while asking questions. Are the stories we tell ourselves accurate? What sorts of things do we overlook as we seek to explain ourselves? What about the larger world? How much of that is deliberately ignored? How much is forgotten? Why?
Formally, I use drawing, printmaking, painting, and digital media to ask questions of visual culture. What is the difference between expression and communication? Is one more important than the other? Does expressing feelings accurately transmit them to the viewer or reader? Does it matter? Combining elements of pure aesthetics, intuitive mark making, and highly considered iconography and text, I blur boundaries between design and fine art, toeing the line between communication and expression and challenging arbitrary ideological lines in the process.
Using writing, I attempt to communicate complex things I’ve learned with simple, accessible language. Less of a subjective personal exploration than my visual work, I write to convey ideas I think are particularly important to understand clearly and discuss as concisely as possible. It is a method of expressing my concerns in a way that feels most effective while seeking to understand and clarify ideas in public discourse and communicate what I’ve learned to others.
