"tree hugger" graphic for coal headwear
While I was working in the Custom Headwear Division at Coal Headwear, the inline team asked me to illustrate a graphic for one of the FW24 colorways of The Field -- a retro style, brushed twill cap with different novelty graphics on every colorway. The team settled on this "Tree Hugger" graphic inspired by the work of classic ski cartoons like those of the Seattle legend, Bob Cram.
This was another opportunity for some fun research -- I love classic comics and remember books of funnies like this at the houses and cabins of my grandparents and friends' families.
The skiier's outfit and skis reference another graphic from The Field but in a different drawing style more reminiscent of the classic comics that the idea sprang from. The lead headwear designer selected the rich olive for the cap, giving the cap a classic feel and the pop colors of the graphic a boost without being bland.
